Scripture in a Catholic school is among the most central aspects that can come to define the general feel of the school community. One of the most common themes in all my work is helping teachers reflect upon the difference between a Catholic school and all other educational choices. In today’s episode it’s time to talk about something that a Catholic school needs to be doing on daily basis. It’s simple. It’s powerful, and it’s easily overlooked.
Scripture in a Catholic school is a crucial aspect of it’s daily impact. The whole school community needs to be constantly hearing the voice of the chief shepherd, namely…Jesus.
The Church documents make constant reference to the role of scripture in a Catholic school as central to allowing that school to fulfill its essential mission. It’s definitely not easy but that does not make it impossible. It’s worth asking ourselves just how central is scripture in our Catholic school community? What stops us from making scripture a central part of each day in our educational and pastoral minisrty?
At the time of writing so many of us are delivering online content from home due to the impact of COVID 19 but this does not mean we have to forget about the crucial role of scripture in a Catholic school.
Scripture In A Catholic School
One of the crucial documents of the Second Vatican Council Dei Verbum gives us a wonderful insight into just how powerful and important scripture is.
“..all the preaching of the Church must be nourished and regulated by Sacred Scripture. For in the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets His children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life.”
These wonderful words remind us that one of the most crucial building blocks in our shared faith community within a Catholic school will always be the precious resource of sacred scripture.
